Ara

Ara is a foundation building a creative, local-first computing paradigm where users' devices become malleable workspaces made of open-source app 'Lego bricks,' with a blockchain layer storing app semantics as a p2p recommendation and discovery engine. It targets open-source developers, designers, node operators, and everyday users, aiming to make open-source sustainable and to provide local-first, privacy-preserving public training data for AI.

Description

Ara is a foundation whose goal is to set a new UI metaphor beyond traditional operating systems by turning open-source apps into malleable, composable 'Lego brick' building blocks that users can create, combine, and personalize on their own devices, with data always staying local. A blockchain layer stores app semantics and relationships, functioning as a p2p recommendation and discovery engine driven by user intent rather than attention, and doubling as public, verifiable training data for local-first AI that can understand app functionality without complex screenshot analysis or MCP integrations. The foundation focuses on aligning four groups—users, designers, open-source developers, and node operators—and is currently in a pilot phase centered on CascadeFund, an initiative to make open-source development sustainable, with future phases including local data project management, a recommendation engine, and a desktop shell.
