Description

Fedimint is an open-source protocol built by and for communities, enabling a secure and decentralized way for individuals to collectively manage and spend bitcoin privately through "federated ecash." By blending distributed custody with blind-signed digital cash notes, it offers a robust path to using bitcoin with enhanced transaction privacy, decentralization, and scalability. It allows users to deposit Bitcoin into a community's Fedimint via Lightning or on-chain deposits and receive privacy-preserving e-cash notes in return. These notes can be transacted instantly and privately with anyone, anytime, anywhere. The project's core mission is to put powerful bitcoin tools directly into the hands of communities, and it is supported by organizations like Blockstream, the Human Rights Foundation, and Spiral. The ecosystem includes wallets like the web-based Vipr Wallet and projects like BitSacco, which is building community banking in Kenya. Recent releases, v0.6 and v0.7, have focused on improving on-chain transactions, simplifying the setup for running Fedimint from home, and upgrading the Lightning Gateway by integrating LDK Node.
