Flashbots is a research and development organization focused on mitigating the negative externalities of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) on blockchains like Ethereum. They aim to create a permissionless, transparent, and sustainable MEV ecosystem through a three-pronged approach: illuminating MEV activity, democratizing access to MEV through open platforms, and distributing any remaining MEV sustainably. The organization operates through two main arms: Flashbots Product, which builds core infrastructure and tools like MEV-Boost, Rollup-Boost, and Protect RPC to redefine the block production supply chain, and Flashbots Research, which explores MEV market dynamics and blockchain design challenges. Their work has evolved from creating MEV-geth to developing MEV-Boost for post-Merge Ethereum, and now focuses on SUAVE (Single Unifying Auction for Value Expression), a project aimed at decentralizing the block builder role and combating centralization from exclusive order flow.
