Source Of Tales

Source of Tales is a long-running MMORPG project porting its game, 'Tales on Stellar,' to the Stellar Network so that players truly own their characters and in-game assets. By using Stellar for authentication and storing character/asset data on-chain, players can move characters between trusted servers and trade items independently of any single game operator.

Description

Source of Tales began development in 2012, with a mobile client built in 2013, originally as a traditional MMORPG with a C++ server and a Qt-based C++ mobile client. Historically, like most MMORPGs, player character data was fully owned and controlled by whoever ran the server, limiting players' ability to trade or move assets outside the game. The project is now working to change this by integrating the Stellar Network, giving players real ownership of their characters and possessions, enabling cross-server portability and independent trading, and adding protection against data loss by moving the main database off private servers and onto Stellar. To achieve this, the team applied for a $7500 grant from round #10 of the Stellar Community Fund to fund six months of part-time development of a JavaScript-based prototype, using NodeJS, the official Stellar SDK, and the Phaser engine for a browser-playable client, before deciding whether to continue in JavaScript, adapt the existing C++ codebase, or port to another language such as Rust.
