SquiggleDAO began organically in March 2021 when community members donated Squiggles to the DAO, resulting in 231 grassroots donations with no ETH or USD compensation. In December 2021 the DAO secured $8M in funding from VCs including Standard Crypto, True Ventures, and The LAO, along with various angel investors, enabling it to pursue larger initiatives. In 2024, SquiggleDAO became the first DAO in history to donate an art piece to a museum. Its Treasury now holds over 330 Squiggles, including pieces minted directly by Snowfro. The DAO organizes museum placements (including MoMA, ICA Miami, and Toledo Museum of Art), produces a podcast featuring notable figures in the NFT and crypto space, sells branded merchandise, hosts events (such as Marfa, NFT Paris, and Art Basel Miami), and provides tools and data resources (gallery explorer, trait explorer, sets tracker, sales/holder data) for the Chromie Squiggle collector community. It primarily serves Squiggle NFT holders, generative art collectors, and museums/cultural institutions.
