Tendermint

Tendermint

Tendermint is the core technology, now primarily developed by a company called Ignite, which focuses on accelerating the transition to Web3. Tendermint itself is software for securely and consistently replicating applications across many machines, providing Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT). It consists of Tendermint Core (a consensus engine) and the Application BlockChain Interface (ABCI), enabling developers to build a wide range of distributed applications. Ignite provides tools like Ignite CLI to help developers build and launch their own sovereign blockchains using this technology.

Description

Tendermint is foundational software designed for secure and consistent application replication across distributed systems, offering Byzantine fault tolerance (BFT). This ensures that even with up to one-third of machines failing, all non-faulty machines maintain an identical transaction log and state. It is composed of two main technical parts: Tendermint Core, a blockchain consensus engine, and the Application BlockChain Interface (ABCI), which allows transactions to be processed in any programming language. This modular design makes Tendermint a versatile tool for various applications, from currencies to infrastructure orchestration. The development and tooling around Tendermint are now largely driven by Ignite, a company that provides Ignite CLI, a tool for building, launching, and maintaining sovereign blockchains. Ignite aims to accelerate the global adoption of Web3 by making blockchain development more accessible, offering documentation, tutorials, and support for developers building on ecosystems like Cosmos, which heavily utilizes Tendermint.
