Towns Protocol

Towns Protocol

Towns Protocol is a decentralized communication platform built on blockchain technology. It enables users to create and manage their own digital communities, called "Spaces," which are user-owned and programmable. The protocol uses a custom appchain and Ethereum's Layer 2 solution, Base, to provide secure, censorship-resistant messaging and integrated financial services. It serves developers and users looking to build or participate in decentralized communities with transparent governance and economic incentives.

Description

Towns Protocol is an open-source, decentralized communication protocol designed to empower developers, creators, and communities to build and own their online social spaces. It leverages blockchain technology, including a custom EVM-compatible L2 appchain (Towns Chain) and smart contracts on Base, to create programmable, user-owned digital communities called “Spaces.” These Spaces feature end-to-end encrypted messaging, on-chain memberships (represented as ERC-721 NFTs), and customizable rules for access, governance, and economics. The protocol emphasizes ownable communication, giving creators control over their data and engagement policies. An innovative economic model incentivizes participation by rewarding various stakeholders, and governance is managed on-chain via the Towns Lodge DAO, allowing for democratic protocol upgrades. The Towns Protocol Grant Program further supports the ecosystem by funding new clients, bots, and modules.
