Description

XMTP (Extensible Message Transport Protocol) is a decentralized messaging network providing enterprise-grade, end-to-end encrypted communication for web3. It allows developers to build applications with features like direct messages, group chats, and notifications. The protocol's security is based on the IETF-standard Messaging Layer Security (MLS), ensuring forward secrecy and post-compromise security, protecting both message content and metadata. XMTP supports a flexible, privacy-first identity model, allowing users to link multiple wallet addresses (including ENS, Farcaster, and smart accounts) to a unified inbox, with user-controlled consent for who can message them. The entire stack is open-source and designed to be a credibly neutral, censorship-resistant platform, with its infrastructure moving towards a decentralized model involving an appchain on Base. The project is stewarded by a company named Ephemera and encourages community contributions through XMTP Improvement Proposals (XIPs).
