Description
The Leu is a community-driven digital local currency for Zurich, launched in May 2022 by the Zurich-based association Encointer, founded in 2018 by Alain Brenzikofer. It aims to strengthen the local and circular economy by encouraging people to buy local products and services with Leu, to support equal opportunities through a community basic income (members can 'scoop' 44 Leu every ten days via the Encointer Wallet app at community gatherings), and to enable co-determination since Leu is governed by its members rather than a bank. Users download the Encointer Wallet app, obtain Leu through gatherings, gifts, or direct purchase (including vouchers at sphères), and then spend it at over 20 participating local businesses in Zurich such as cafés, food and service providers. The project also offers a program for companies to join as acceptance points to win new customers and support a more sustainable, socially-focused local economy. As of the evidence, the Leu community has grown to over 200 active members.
