Description

Meebits launched in May 2021 as a collection of 20,000 generative avatars built in voxels rather than pixels, reimagining the profile picture concept pioneered by CryptoPunks for a three-dimensional internet. Created by Larva Labs (with early prototypes dating back to 2018 under the codename 'Snoutz'), each Meebit is algorithmically assembled across types including humans, pigs, elephants, robots, skeletons, visitors, and 'dissected' variants, with generative clothing patterns and tattoos. Every Meebit ships with a T-pose OBJ file so collectors can bring their avatars into game engines, 3D studios, or virtual worlds. The original launch included a custom marketplace embedded directly in the smart contract enabling multi-asset barter-style trades, though it saw limited use compared to broader NFT platforms. The collection sold out within a single afternoon and has since appeared in music collaborations, exhibitions, and metaverse platforms. Meebits was acquired by Yuga Labs in 2022 and later by MeebCo in 2025, which now develops and maintains the project's official site (meebits.com) and is expanding it into interactive merchandise drops, 3D-printed sculptures, and large-scale public art.
