Larva Labs is a two-person creative technology studio founded by Matt Hall and John Watkinson, who met studying computer science in college and formalized their partnership in 2005. Using code as their primary medium, they create projects that explore digital identity, on-chain permanence, and the relationship between algorithms and art — including CryptoPunks (10,000 algorithmically generated pixel portraits launched in 2017, widely credited as a foundational influence on the ERC-721/NFT standard), Autoglyphs (the first generative art project both created and stored entirely on-chain, launched 2019), Meebits (20,000 generative 3D voxel avatars launched in 2021), and Quine (a 2025 generative art project for Art Blocks' Curated series exploring self-replicating code as art). Their work has entered the permanent collections of institutions such as MoMA, the Whitney Museum, Centre Pompidou, LACMA, ICA Miami, and ZKM Karlsruhe, and has been sold through Christie's and Sotheby's. While IP ownership of CryptoPunks has since passed to Yuga Labs and then the non-profit Infinite Node Foundation, and Meebits IP to Yuga Labs and then MeebCo, Larva Labs continues to publish writing and new generative art projects such as Quine. Clients and audiences include art collectors, museums, auction houses, and the broader Web3/NFT community.
