Description
CryptoPunks is an interactive digital art project on the Ethereum blockchain comprising 10,000 unique, algorithmically generated 24x24 pixel characters (humans, apes, zombies, and aliens), permanently inscribed on-chain. Launched in June 2017 by Larva Labs before the term 'NFT' existed, it was distributed for free via a built-in smart-contract marketplace to anyone with an Ethereum wallet, and is credited as the prototype that helped shape the ERC-721 NFT standard. Collectors adopted Punks as profile pictures and status symbols, developing a shared vocabulary around traits and rarity; individual Punks have sold for millions at auction houses like Christie's and Sotheby's and entered institutional collections including MoMA, ICA Miami, Centre Pompidou, and LACMA. Meebits launched in May 2021 as a collection of 20,000 generative avatars built in voxels rather than pixels, reimagining the profile picture concept pioneered by CryptoPunks for a three-dimensional internet. Created by Larva Labs (with early prototypes dating back to 2018 under the codename 'Snoutz'), each Meebit is algorithmically assembled across types including humans, pigs, elephants, robots, skeletons, visitors, and 'dissected' variants, with generative clothing patterns and tattoos. Every Meebit ships with a T-pose OBJ file so collectors can bring their avatars into game engines, 3D studios, or virtual worlds. The original launch included a custom marketplace embedded directly in the smart contract enabling multi-asset barter-style trades, though it saw limited use compared to broader NFT platforms. The collection sold out within a single afternoon and has since appeared in music collaborations, exhibitions, and metaverse platforms. Quine, created by Larva Labs, is a generative art project deployed on Art Blocks as the closing entry in the Art Blocks Curated series. A 'quine' is a computer program that outputs its own source code when run, a concept related to Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem and Turing's Halting Problem. Larva Labs extended this idea by building quine programs that embed their own source code within visual art, so that each artwork is simultaneously executable code and visual composition, analogous to how DNA both constitutes and reproduces biological life. The Quine generator deployed on Art Blocks produces, for each token, a unique smaller generator program built from code snippets covering pattern-generation engines (inspired by kinematics, discrete math, and the Autoglyphs algorithm), symmetry calculations, color selection, and text layout, using extreme 'code golf' optimization to fit within the grid. Some tokens (Perfect-Quines) exactly reproduce themselves, while others form longer self-referential loops (2-Quine, 3-Quine, 5-Quine, etc., termed 'Quinity'), with collectors able to use Art Blocks's PostParams technology to select which generation is displayed.
